Patience and Fortitude, the pair of marble lions that stand proudly before the majestic Beaux-Arts building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street in Manhattan, were first named Leo Astor and Leo Lenox, after The New York Public Library founders John Jacob Astor and James Lenox.

The company was inspired by John and George Astor, flute makers who came to England in 1778 from Waldorf, Germany. John left Europe for New England in 1783 and became a merchant in furs, pianos and real estate, becoming the first multimillionaire in the United States. From humble beginnings, the Astor family acquired significant real estate holdings and became know as the "landlords of New York", and one of the wealthiest families in history. Their legacy lives on in their many public works including the New York Public Library and the Waldorf -Astoria Hotel.
